If you’re trying to log in to Unicount using your Estonian ID-card or e-Resident card and it’s not working, don’t worry. There are a few common reasons for this issue, and we’ll walk you through how to fix them.
Most likely reasons (and quick fixes)
- Missing software or plugins: You might not have the DigiDoc software installed or the browser plugin needed to use your ID-card.
- Browser not supported or misconfigured: Some browsers need extensions enabled (like Web eID) to work with your card.
- Operating system or hardware issues: Your OS or card reader might need updates, or the card itself could have expired certificates.
The easiest long-term fix: Use SMART-ID instead
If you’re tired of ID-card problems or want a faster, more reliable login method, switch to SMART-ID:
- No card reader or plugins needed
- Create your account in under 3 minutes
- Works on both Android and iPhone
- Log in and sign documents securely and remotely

Step-by-Step troubleshooting
Step 1: Check if your card is working
- Open the DigiDoc4 app. Your card should display your name and ID info.
- When the card is inserted into the card reader, the photo is facing downwards, and the chip is facing upwards
- If DigiDoc suggests updating certificates or software, follow its advice!
Step 2: Test it in your browser
Enable the Web eID extension in:
- Chrome → “More tools” → “Extensions”, Follow the instructions with photos HERE.
- Edge → “Extensions” → “Manage extensions”. Follow the instructions with photos HERE.
- Safari → “Settings” → “Extensions” tab → Allow Web eID on all sites. Follow the instructions with photos HERE.
- Firefox → Install Web eID (and PKCS11 Loader if using Ubuntu). Follow the instructions with photos HERE.
📌 If you see the “Token signing” extension, remove it. It might interfere. Instructions for removal can be found here.
Step 3: Clear browser cache
Sometimes old data blocks new authentication. Clear your cache with:
- Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows). Follow instructions with photos HERE.
- Cmd + Alt + E (Mac, Safari). To clear the browsing data manually on Apple Safari, follow the instructions HERE.

Step 4: Check security software
Antivirus or adware might block your card. Common troublemakers:
- AVAST, BitDefender, Web Companion, Superfish
Disable or configure your antivirus to allow DigiDoc access.
Step 5: Reinstall DigiDoc software
- Download the latest version for Windows, macOS, or Linux from ID.ee
- For mobile: Use RIA DigiDoc app on Android or iOS to sign documents
Step 6: Remove old certificates
On shared computers, DigiDoc might show multiple users’ certificates.
- In DigiDoc4 settings, click “Remove old certificates”
- On macOS, run a terminal command: sudo rm -rf /var/db/TokenCache/tokens/
- For Linux, no action needed; certificates aren’t cached.
Step 7: Still stuck?
- Read error messages carefully
- Check for updates or security alerts on id.ee news
- Try Smart-ID for mobile logins, it’s legally equal to ID-cards
Understanding authentication in Estonia
Estonia uses a central secure login system for national e-services. You can log in once using:
- ID-card
- Mobile-ID
- Smart-ID
- Recognized EU digital IDs
Once authenticated, you can access other services without logging in again. This is called Single Sign-On (SSO). And if you’ve forgotten to log out on a shared device? You can end the session remotely via minuautentimine.ria.ee.
